You either recall that friend or were that friend growing up who would knock on the door excitedly to say, “Do you want to come outside to play?” It was like being in a heartwarming sitcom of the kid next door standing in anticipation of your response to, “Yes”, and you both happily stepped out because you knew it was going to be an unforgettable adventure. As adults, we need those types of friendships too, of people who take the time to see us, have us step out of the daunting realities of the day, and pause to take a moment to bask in the joy of the day. My sweet friend Michelle did that for me during a dire time when I was immersed in juggling my many roles and responsibilities, and desperately needed a break.

My girlfriend reached out to check on me following news of learning that my husband had been hospitalized extended for care, and her kindness lifted my spirits. We met serendipitously through me being her son’s teacher, and a connection organically blossomed into a beautiful friendship.Although hailing from Scotland, her warmth in personality and hospitality radiates the Southern charm of a Georgia peach, making our connection truly special for me as a self-professed Southern Belle. Michelle also embodies the empowering spirit of assertiveness that I admire, inspiring me to tap into my own inner strength.

Embracing my roots as a Downtown Augusta Girl, I joined forces with Michelle, a former realtor with an intimate knowledge of the local scene, to embark on a vibrant adventure from my house to a trendy new brunch spot celebrating the art of waffle-making with a low-country twist. As we strolled through Downtown, winding our way through picturesque neighborhoods, we reveled in the beauty of our surroundings, admired stunning murals crafted by local artists, and I shared with Michelle the profound stories of African American and Chinese immigrants who paved the way for the Augusta community, including the remarkable establishment of the Augusta canal. The ability to relax, unleash the realness of what was going on behind the scenes, and to just have actual laugh out loud is something I will treasure from that day. We closed the day sitting on the front porch rocking in my white rocking chairs listening to old school soul music.

I know life can get ridiculously crazy as busy moms, and sometimes we can be slammed with crisis on top of our already insane load as women, but here’s the thing: make time to surround yourself with real friends who uplift and inspire you, and those who bring comforting joy and encourage you to step outside your comfort zone and live! The truth is, you deserve it and need it to thrive!
