This Joy I Have!

A Lesson That Stayed With Me

Years ago, during our morning devotion time, my children and I were discussing the importance of thanking God for His blessings. As our lesson came to a close, my youngest daughter asked a simple question: “What’s joy?” Today, that little girl is sixteen, and her older brother is a young adult. Yet after all these years, the conversation that followed remains one of my favorite reminders about the difference between happiness and joy.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him…

Romans 15:13

More Than Happiness

Before I could answer, my son eagerly shared his thoughts. “Only God can give you joy. Happiness comes and goes, but joy stays in your heart and nobody can take it away.” His words carried wisdom far beyond his years. Happiness often depends on circumstances, people, or possessions. We can be excited one moment and discouraged the next. Joy, however, is different. Joy is rooted in Christ and remains even when life changes around us.

The Joy That Remains

The story of Job reminds us that everything in life can change in a moment. Positions, possessions, relationships, and seasons come and go. Yet through every trial, God’s presence remains constant. The enemy may try to attack our peace, confidence, or circumstances, but he cannot take away the joy that comes from a relationship with Christ. The joy of the Lord is not based on what we have ;it’s based on who He is.

The World Can’t Take It Away

As our devotion ended, we sang an old church song from my childhood: “This joy that I have, the world didn’t give it to me, and the world can’t take it away.” Those words still ring true today. Looking back, I realize God was teaching all of us that morning. Real joy is found in knowing Him, trusting His promises, and resting in His presence. My prayer is that you experience the kind of joy that outlasts every circumstance; the joy that only God can give.
